For this unit, each student was assigned a president. We looked for referenced to “City Upon a Hill” within each president’s speeches. We’ve have concluded that within hard economic times, presidents were less likely to use these references. But when on the topic of foreign policy, many presidents have depicted America as being the leader of the world. This is also known as the Messiah Complex, when America wanted to get involved with each countries affairs due to the image that America has created for itself.
